Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home
J. Jonah Jameson’s firebrand news site The Daily Bugle has released a video of the noble superhero Mysterio’s final message from Spider-Man: Far From Home. Mysterio - also known as Quentin Beck - came to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Earth from his own dimension in pursuit of dangerous beings known as Elementals. He then nobly sacrificed his life defending London from a super-Elemental made up of all the different elements.
Except, of course, none of that is true. As Spider-Man: Far From Home’s twist revealed, Quentin Beck was actually just a disgruntled former employee of Stark Industries who was angry at Tony Stark for wasting the B.A.R.F. (Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing) technology he’d created - and also for calling it B.A.R.F. Using a motion capture suit, drones, B.A.R.F. hologram tech, and a team of similarly disgruntled former Stark employees, Beck faked both the Elementals and his battles with them in an effort to replace Iron Man as the world’s most admired superhero.
Spider-Man managed to stop Mysterio from destroying London and killing his classmates, and Quentin Beck was ultimately the architect of his own demise when he was killed by bullets from one of his own drones. However, he managed to get the last laugh by recording a video that made it look like Spider-Man was the villain of the whole affair, and revealing to the world that Spidey’s real name is Peter Parker. This was revealed in Spider-Man: Far From Home’s mid-credits scene, along with the surprise return of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, and the official Daily Bugle tie-in site has now released Mysterio’s final message online.
On the Daily Bugle website the video is accompanied by an article eulogizing Mysterio as a “the greatest superhero of all time” and decrying Spider-Man as a “masked menace.” The video doesn’t include Mysterio’s reveal of Spider-Man’s secret identity, but the article teases an “even bigger story,” saying, “we are still working on deciphering the encryption, but the details could reveal an earth-shattering consequence, which we will soon publish!”
Things have certainly been tumultuous for Spider-Man recently - though Mysterio can’t really be blamed for that. Difficult negotiations between Sony and Disney for Spider-Man’s continued presence in the MCU led Sony to declare that Spider-Man would be parting ways with Marvel Studios and the Avengers. However, the two studios ultimately reached a deal to prolong their shared custody of the character, and announced that the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home will release in 2021.
Of course, now that the world knows his real name, life is going to be very different for Spider-Man. Can he clear his name, or will Mysterio get to keep his final victory?
