Mysterio’s costume design in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home movie is a fusion of a few different superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Thor and Vision. While the costume is still inspired by the classic outfit that Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) dons in the comics, it has a more advanced and technological feel to it.
Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Mysterio, while traditionally bitter enemies in the source material, will team up in Spider-Man: Far From Home to battle against the Elementals. As an added twist, in the newest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, Mysterio claims to be from a different Earth than the standard one that the MCU films take place on. Whether or not this is true (as well as if Mysterio is actually a good guy) remains to be seen, but the design choices for Mysterio’s costume are very much inspired by heroes from the main Earth in the long-running franchise.
While visiting the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Screen Rant talked to producer Eric Carroll and a costume designer about the inspiration for Mysterio’s suit in the film. According to Carroll, the outfit looks like a “cross between Iron Man and Dr. Strange” while the designer added to this, claiming influence was also taken Iron Man’s chest piece, Vision’s body and Thor’s cape.
Why these four separate heroes were chosen as inspiration (or if it was even a deliberate decision) wasn’t made clear, but there are a few likely reasons. If Spider-Man: Far From Home is trying to fool fans into thinking that Mysterio is actually a superhero for the entire film, what better way to pull that off than to mirror his costume after four very distinctly honorable heroes? And should Mysterio turn out to be the secret main antagonist of the film and actually of the main Earth (though he does name drop Earth-616, which is the main reality in the comics), it would be a nice little injection of irony to have him dressed as and portrayed as a hero.
While this would certainly fit Mysterio’s M.O. in the comics of fooling both Spider-Man and everyone else with false imagery (usually in the form of concocted special effects), it’s also entirely possible that director Jon Watts and his writers realize that fans are onto them and will actually make Mysterio a real bona fide superhero. How they would pull that off remains to be seen, but it’s still an interesting choice by everyone involved to make Mysterio’s outfit in Spider-Man: Far From Home similar to so many different MCU superheroes.
