Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio dominates the subscriber cover of Empire’s Spider-Man: Far From Home issue. Now that Avengers: Endgame is out in theaters and the spoiler-ban has been lifted, the ramifications of the finale are starting to be revealed in more detail. This will come when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters this summer, and - as the most recent trailer showed - shows how Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is coping with the death of Iron Man. His solution? Take a break from the superhero game by going on a summer vacation overseas.
His time off as Spider-Man won’t last long, as he’s quickly recruited by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to work with Mysterio and help defeat The Elementals. Fans have been skeptical of this plot for some time now, mainly because Mysterio is notoriously a trickster villain in the comics, which has even led many to wonder whether or not he’s actually from a different dimension as he claims. From what Sony and Marvel Studios have shown of the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and the final film of Phase 3, there haven’t been any signs of this changing to pit Mysterio and Spider-Man against one another.
Through his heroic ways (and possible charade), Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio looks to be a highlight of the film. He’s been featured prominently in the marketing, and longtime fans of the comics have loved how he looks in live-action. Thanks to his fishbowl helmet, Mysterio takes over the recently revealed Subscriber Only cover of Empire for their Spider-Man: Far From Home issue. The cover is incredibly well-designed by Orlando Arocena, with Spider-Man and the UK setting of the film seen through the reflection of Mysterio’s helmet.
Interestingly enough, this cover is one of the only pieces of promotional material for Spider-Man: Far From Home that alludes to Mysterio and Spider-Man in some sort of face-off. It is unclear if this will actually happen in the movie, though, or if this is just Arocena’s way of making a stunning cover. Since all of the marketing for the film has pushed Mysterio as a hero, any such confrontation will likely not happen until the very end, if it does at all.
During our set visit for Spider-Man: Far From Home, producer Eric Carroll did tease that Mysterio’s arc is somewhat similar to the friend-turned-foe arc that Baron Mordo received in Doctor Strange. If this is the case, then a true fight between Mysterio and Spider-Man could be saved for a future installment. They aren’t focused on Sinister Six at the moment, but that could certainly be in the cards down the line, as long as Mysterio is still around that is. With an actor like Jake Gyllenhaal on board and the potential of Mysterio, hopefully Spider-Man: Far From Home is the first of many appearances.
