Netflix has become one of the biggest platforms dominating the internet streaming sector. Users subscribe with a certain fee and are given access to a sea of movies and tv shows to watch. However, one complaint that has been constant over the years amongst Netflix users is that they are unable to log into their accounts – that they have been hacked.
Getting hacked is not palatable in any form, and it’s particularly frustrating when it happens on an account with an active subscription, as it then happens that users pay for the subscription while the hackers get to utilize it.

On Web
- Log into your Netflix account and click on the drop-down profile icon next to the notification (bell) icon which is found at the top right of your screen.
- Select “Account”.
- Scroll down to the “PROFILE & PARENTAL CONTROLS” section, and expand your account.
- Now scroll down the options under your account selection and click on View next to the “Viewing activity” option.
- Go back to the main Account page and select “Recent Device Streaming Activity” under the “SETTINGS” section to view every location from which your account has been logged in. Check to find out any regions or countries that differ from where you’ve been in recent times.
- If you notice this, immediately go to “Settings” and then select “Sign out of all devices”.
- Go back to “Account” and select “Change Password” which is found at the top right of your screen.
- Change your password. It is advisable to check the optional box which reads “Require all devices to sign in again with a new password.”
Once you’ve done the above, all devices linked to your Netflix account will be automatically logged out, thus preventing the hacker from having access to your account again.
On Smartphone
- Log into your Netflix account on your smartphone.
- Tap on “More” which is found at the bottom right of your screen.
- Select “App Settings” and then go to “Action” where you’ll find your e-mail address.
- Tap on it and then change your password.
- Authorize two-step authentication for your e-mail address so that every time you choose to log in, you will be sent an e-mail which you must verify before you are granted access into your account.
This might seem like a long process, but it is better and necessary to protect your account from hackers.
However, if the hacker goes even further to tamper with your log in details such as your e-mail and possibly credit card details too, then it will be impossible to regain access through settings in the account. You have to contact the Netflix Help Centre. You can make a free call through to them via the Netflix app on your smartphone to report this issue.
You might be lucky to recover your account if the information requested of you can be checked and verified. However, more often than not, you may not be able to get your account back if most of your credentials have been changed, because there will be no evidence that the account was initially yours. This means you would need to open a new account to be able to catch up with your favorite shows and latest movies.
In conclusion, we can agree that Netflix needs to beef up the protection of data security, but since this is not as it should be yet, the best way to protect your account from getting hacked is to make your password as protected as possible, i.e, including uppercase & lowercase letters, numbers and, if necessary, symbols.
