The first teaser trailer is here for the upcoming animated film, My Little Pony: The Movie. My Little Pony is no longer considered just an ’80s phenomenon. Though the original toy line was discontinued in 1991, Hasbro successfully relaunched the My Little Pony toy line in 2003, with its biggest resurgence coming in 2010 with the launch of the animated series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Since then, the ponies have enjoyed huge popularity among young children of all genders and their parents, many of whom were kids when My Little Pony first launched.

Lionsgate have chosen to capitalize on this popularity with the release of My Little Pony: The Movie, set for this October. Featuring an all-star voice cast, including Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Michael Pena, Zoe Saldana, Liev Schreiber, Uzo Aduba, Sia, and Taye Diggs, the first teaser for My Little Pony: The Movie, has been released online and can be viewed, above.

Though it is only brief, it pretty much contains all one could expect from a My Little Pony movie teaser; glitter, sparkles, and ponies, of course. The animation is sharper than that used in the TV series, of course, but essentially unchanged, and the teaser has made sure to highlight the inclusion of fan-favorites; including, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash, the latter of which has been largely responsible for drawing more boys toward the franchise. The starring names of the voice cast all voice new characters within the franchise, which are all sure to be given their own toy line, of course. Characters that stand out as potential favorites include Blunt’s Tempest Shadow, and Chenoweth’s Princess Skystar. The plot of the movie revolves around the ‘Mane 6’ group of ponies, who travel to the very end of Equestria when a dark force threatens Ponyville. Along the way, they meet new friends and face new challenges as they try to save Ponyville. Of course, we all know what the outcome will be, but there will still be enough here to keep young viewers thoroughly enthralled. Also, it’ll be worth checking the movie out just to see Sia as a pony.

Lionsgate are no stranger to family movies, having enjoyed success with the Shaun the Sheep Movie, which is also getting a sequel. Right now, Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie is performing well at the box office, proving itself as a viable reboot of the franchise. While My Little Pony is not quite on the same level, there is still a lot to be said for targeting these films at children whose parents remember the originals; the sense of nostalgia is likely to play a strong part in audience figures. That, and Hasbro’s lucrative range of My Little Pony merchandise, of course.
