The Ms. Marvel TV show for Disney+ will reportedly begin filming in April 2020. Marvel’s announced several new series that will premiere on Disney’s streaming service, including one for fan-favorite Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel. Comedic writer Bisha K. Ali is attached to be the showrunner. Brie Larson, who plays Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the MCU, has expressed interest in introducing the character into the cinematic universe.
Originally, the moniker of Ms. Marvel belonged to Carol Danvers, who now uses the name Captain Marvel. In recent years, Ms. Marvel is the name used by teenager Kamala Khan. Khan discovers that she has Inhuman genes and is polymorphous, which means she has the ability to stretch and change her shape. She adopts the name to “Ms. Marvel” to honor her favorite superhero, Captain Marvel. Kamala Khan is known for being the first Muslim or character to headline her own comic. Ms. Marvel comics have been a critical success since its first issue in 2014, and has become a favorite among fans. Kamala Khan has been praised as a respectful and realistic depiction of a 16-year old trying to become a hero while dealing with her religious family.
In a recent listing on Production Weekly (hat tip ComicBook), it’s revealed Ms. Marvel filming would begin in spring 2020. Even though no official premiere date has been announced, it is likely that Marvel aims to release Ms. Marvel around the same time as Hawkeye, another Marvel television show set to revolve around a young teenager developing her abilities. No casting for the show has been revealed yet, but announcements should be coming in the near future, in anticipation for the first day of filming.
Because of Ms. Marvel’s rapid success in the comics, Marvel had expressed its desire to integrate the character into other media for several years. Even acclaimed actor-writer Mindy Kaling has expressed interest in developing a Ms. Marvel movie. She has since appeared in several video games, as will as several animated series and an animated movie. One of the character’s creators, G. Willow Wilson, has expressed her excitement in the character’s popularity but is surprised at the enthusiasm towards adapting the character for live-action. She even said she’s concerned about Ms. Marvel’s powers looking “creepy” in live-action, as Khan was largely designed based on her status as a character that strictly appears in comics.
In addition to Ms. Marvel, Marvel announced at D23 this year that comic book characters She-Hulk and Moon Knight will also be getting their own series in the future. This is likely Marvel’s attempt to appeal to more dedicated Marvel fans, as these characters are more niche than the headlining heroes in the current MCU. Hopefully viewers will become just as fond of these newcomers as they are of the original Avengers.
