Sonoya Mizuno has been cast in the forthcoming Mouse Guard movie. Originally a comic book series written and illustrated by David Petersen, Mouse Guard is set during the medieval era in a world of sentient mice and tells the story of a group of brave rodents who seek to protect others of their kind from predatory animals and guard the mouse way of life during a time of fragile peace. The series has been collected into two volumes and also includes several spinoff stories that expand Petersen’s fictional world. The primary entries in the tale were recognized at the 2008 Eisner awards with two gongs.
In 2016, it was reported that a movie adaptation of Mouse Guard was in the works at 20th Century Fox. Wes Ball (The Maze Runner franchise) has since signed on to the project as director and Gary Whitta (After Earth, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has been confirmed as screenwriter. Acting as producers are Matt Reeves (The Batman), Ross Richie, Stephen Christy, Joe Hartwick and director, Wes Ball. As one may expect, Mouse Guard is set to be a motion-capture affair and the film has already cast Idris Elba, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and mo-cap master, Andy Serkis.
Deadline is now reporting that Sonoya Mizuno of Crazy Rich Asians fame has been cast in a major role. The original piece claims that Mizuno will play the “title character” but doesn’t name the role specifically. Aside from her recent stint in Crazy Rich Asians, Mizuno has also appeared in Ex Machina and Annihilation and will star in the forthcoming Devs miniseries.
Since the title Mouse Guard refers to a group of characters rather than one specific figure, it’s not immediately obvious who the original report is suggesting Mizuno will portray in the movie. Assuming none of the roles are gender-swapped however, it would seem that Sadie, a young, fierce and noble member of the Guard, is the most likely fit. The group’s leader Gwendolyn is also perhaps a possibility. In any case, it’ll certainly be fascinating to see how Mizuno fares in the world of motion-capture performance, given that the actress is still at a relatively early stage of her career.
Mouse Guard feels like an inherently ambitious project and with the recent sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney, it’s encouraging to see that progress on the movie is still being made, as the transition has certainly had an impact on other releases.
