Motorola Moto Z3 Play – Device Overview

Motorola announced the Moto Z3 Play back in 2018. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset coupled with 4/6 GB of RAM. The phone offers an onboard storage capacity of up to 128GB and has a dedicated microSD card slot. Moto Z3 Play sports a display of 6.01-inches and has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Other features include 1080 x 2160 pixel resolution, 18:9 ratio, and 402 PPI density. The phone is splash and dust resistant.

In the camera department, the phone comes equipped with a dual-camera setup with a 12MP primary shooter and a 5 MP depth sensor. The camera is capable of shooting 4K@30fps, and 1080p@30/60fps. For selfie, the front has an 8 MP shooter. The fingerprint scanner is located on the side of the phone and under the hood the phone comes with a 3,000 mAh battery with Fast charging 15W support.

How to install the firmware on Moto Z3 Play

Note that there are two methods that you can follow to update your Motorola Moto Z3 Play smartphone. The first method is via ADB sideload method while the other is via recovery method. We will give you stepwise instructions to successfully upgrade your Moto Z3 Play phone.

Pre-requisites

  • Note that the firmware provided in this post is only for the Moto Z3 Play.
  • Install the latest Motorola USB drivers on your PC.
  • Download the latest ADB and Fastboot tools on your PC.
  • Make sure to create a backup of your phone.

  • Charge your Moto Z3 to at least 60% to avoid any issues during the update procedure.

Update Via Sideload Method

  • Download and extract the contents of the ADB and Fastboot tools from the given link above.
  • Also, download the firmware from the given software update tracker.
  • Paste the downloaded firmware file to the same folder where you have extracted the contents of the ADB and Fastboot tools.
  • Boot your phone into Recovery Mode. To do that, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. Then press the Volume Down key to highlight Recovery mode. Finally, tap the Power key to restart into Recovery mode.
  • Now, select Apply Update from ADB.
  • You need to connect your Moto Z3 to the PC using the USB cable.
  • Then open a command prompt in the same folder of ADB.
  • Execute the below command:
  • adb sideload Filename.zip
  • (Filename here means the name of the firmware file you have downloaded)
  • This will start the installation process.
  • That’s it!

Update Via Recovery Method

  • Head over to Go to Settings –> About Phone –> Tap on Build Number 7 Times.
  • This will enable Developer Options on your phone.
  • Now go to Developer Options and enable the USB Debugging option.
  • Download the firmware file from the above software update tracker.
  • Reboot your Moto Z3 Play into the Recovery mode. To do that, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. Then press the Volume Down key to highlight Recovery mode. Finally, tap the Power key to restart into Recovery mode.
  • Select Apply Update from SD Card.
  • Locate and select the downloaded firmware zip file.
  • This will start the installation process.
  • That’s it!
