Reality television is a magnet for drama. That’s what the concept is about, though. When egos are pitted against each other in the most insane situations, things are bound to happen that will leave the audience in shock and disbelief.
2019 has certainly been a great year for reality TV. Given that it’s been an eventful and successful year for our favorite drama-filled spectacles of shows, it hasn’t been without controversy either. Here are our picks for this year’s most controversial reality TV moments.
5. Sean Spicer Being On Dancing With the Stars
Dancing With the Stars announced this season’s new contestants and everyone was excited to see what they could pull off. Among these announced celebrities was Hannah Brown of Bachelorette fame, comedian Kel Mitchell, The Office star Kate Flannery, and former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Fans of Dancing With the Stars were less than amused with the inclusion of Mr. Spicer.
When you introduce a political figure to primetime entertainment, there are sure to be some unenthused fans. Fellow contestant Karamo Brown, who expressed support for Spicer, deleted his Twitter after the backlash.
4. Jed Wyatt’s Secret Girlfriend During The Bachelorette
Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette was a season tormented by drama. Viewers recall that early on in the season, Jed Wyatt admitted to Hannah that he originally joined the show to drive his musical career, but had since fallen legitimately head-over-heels for her. While that was a major red flag, it was also seen as candid and honest and may have helped thrust Wyatt forward in winning her over.
This all came crashing down just after the final rose ceremony had ended with Jed being putting a ring on Hannah’s finger. Haley Stevens, the girlfriend he never actually broke up with, informed the public of the truth, that the two of them were “in love” at the time of Wyatt’s Bachelorette debut. Jed wasn’t the only Bachelor to have had a relationship just prior to filming the season. Our next Bachelor, Peter Weber, had a similar controversy, but he ended up clearing his name as him and his girlfriend had actually broken up. Jed, regretfully, made no such claim.
3. Sumit’s Secret Marriage on 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way
Many of 90 Day Fiancé fans were left speechless when a shocking revelation came out about lovers Jenny Slatten and Sumit. After Sumit got a call on his phone, he began to act strange, briefly panicking and telling Jenny to lock the door. Shortly after, there was a knock on the door from the father-in-law of Sumit. Sumit has been married to another woman for the last two years.
90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way viewers all noticed how a lack of action from Sumit was reaching a breaking point with the couple, but we never anticipated it escalating to quite this level. Jenny begged and pleaded for Sumit to marry her so that she could stay there in India with him, but it was never quite clear what was holding him back until now. At the current moment, he is left with a decision: his wife of two years, or Jenny?
2. Peter Weber Announced as The Bachelor
Typically when The Bachelor is announced, it’s followed by roaring, enthusiastic fans. This last announcement, however, hit hard and not to its usual fanfare. Peter Weber was, by no means, a heavily disliked Bachelor candidate. It’s more an issue of who it could have been, as many fans had a couple of others in mind.
This announcement has started somewhat of a feud between Peter and former Bachelor in Paradise star Mike Johnson, who rallied with fans in hopes of the very first black Bachelor being announced. Mike was seen as a viable candidate to make this historic moment happen, but it just wasn’t in the cards for him. At least for now.
1. Ashley Martson Jay Smith Drama on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?
There’s a lot to unpack here, but it all started when Ashley Martson discovered her husband, Jay Smith, had cheated on her with another woman. She responded by literally pushing him out of her house and, when he wouldn’t leave her alone, called the cops on him. This led to his deportation back to Jamaica. Jay Smith took to social media to let us know he had found love with a vacationer in Jamaica.
Ashley Martson herself even confirmed herself to be in a relationship with the controversial Bachelor in Paradise star, Christian Estrada. However, Ashley and Jay were recently seen partying together, telling us this story isn’t over just yet and we’ll likely be seeing them in the news for a while.
