The upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has cast the character Nitara. Mortal Kombat has been a popular video game franchise since the ’90s, but the series is coming back to the big screen in a few years. The Mortal Kombat franchise has gotten two movies in the past, but neither one of them did well critically. Now, producer James Wan is rebooting the franchise with Simon McQuoid in the director’s chair.
Fans of the series have been itching for updates ever since the project was announced, and several of the main Mortal Kombat characters have been cast this year. The first casting announcement was Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero back in July. The film has also cast popular characters like Scorpian and Shang Tsung, who will be played by Hiroyuki Sanada and Chin Han respectively. Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson are also a part of the cast and will be taking on the roles of Sonya Blade and Kano. Now it’s been revealed that a lesser-known character will also be part of the movie.
According to Mortal Kombat writer Greg Russo (hat tip Bloody Disgusting), the vampire fighter Nitara will be a character in Mortal Kombat. After responding to a fan on Twitter, Russo not only confirmed that Nitara would be in the movie, but that Elissa Cadwell would be playing her. Nitara made her first appearance Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance in 2002 and has only been included in a few games since then. Russo’s tweet can be seen below:
While the cast of Mortal Kombat has already filled out, fans have gotten several other updates on the project. Unlike the previous two Mortal Kombat movies, the Mortal Kombat reboot will be rated R and will include brutal fatalities that the series has become known for. A few years ago Wan stated that they wouldn’t rush the Mortal Kombat reboot, but now a few years later, production on Mortal Kombat has begun with the film on track for a March 2021 release date.
The name Elissa Cadwell may not sound familiar, but that is because she hasn’t had any acting roles in her career. Cadwell has performed stunts for films like The Shallows, Aquaman, and Dora and the Lost City of Gold, which will prove useful in a movie that will be filled with fight sequences. The inclusion of Nitara is a surprising update for Mortal Kombat fans since the character hasn’t had a lot of big roles in the Mortal Kombat franchise. That being said, long-time fans of the series will no doubt be thrilled to have the vampire character included in the reboot.
