The upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot movie has found its Sonya Blade and Kano. This comes less than a month after the film officially cast its Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Mileena (Sisi Stringer) and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) in lead roles. Mortal Kombat is set to release in 2021, and is a reboot of the 1995 film of the same name, which received mixed to negative reviews from critics but made a decent profit at the box office, leading to a much-maligned sequel in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. That film failed at the box office and was completely panned by critics and fans alike, but now studio New Line looks to give the franchise another shot.

Mortal Kombat will be based on the long-running and extremely popular video game series, which just recently released Mortal Kombat 11, a game that was well-received by fans and critics and kept the 17-year-old franchise running strong. The new movie will be produced by James Wan, who’s responsible for some of the most successful horror films of the past decade, including The Conjuring series, as well as directing the billion-dollar-grossing Aquaman last year. It’ll also be the first R-rated theatrical Mortal Kombat film, as those involved with the film hope to capture the brutal and gory fatality-centered combat of the games.

According to THR, the Mortal Kombat reboot has officially found its Sonya Blade and Kano, with The Meg’s Jessica McNamee and House of Lies’ Josh Lawson filling the roles. Also in talks for an unknown role is Lewis Tan, who recently starred in Netflix’s Wu Assassins series. No other plot points of the upcoming movie were revealed.

Casting Sonya Blade and Kano is a big deal for the Mortal Kombat reboot, especially the former, who’s one of the main protagonists of the video game series. Kano, on the other hand, is Blade’s mortal enemy throughout them. Whether or not the upcoming film establishes that plot point between the two characters is unknown, but considering its importance to Blade’s character development, it’s likely Wan and director Simon McQuoid will touch on it. As for which character Tan could be portraying, that’s a little more difficult to say, but a fun possibility is that producers are going to throw a curveball at fans and put him in the role of Johnny Cage. This is obviously not confirmed, however.

Either way, the Mortal Kombat reboot is really starting to fill out its main cast (and even popular side characters like Sub-Zero) and is looking as promising as ever. Whether or not it can break a long-standing curse of video game movies underwhelming audiences and critics remains to be seen, but with Wan as producer, anything is possible.
