The Mortal Kombat live-action movie reboot has gotten an official 2021 release date. The Mortal Kombat series started back in 1992 when the first video game was released as an arcade game. Over the years the franchise has gotten a ton of sequels, comic books, and even a few live-action movies. Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation were both released back in the 1990s and received lackluster reviews, but now Warner Bros. is preparing to reboot the franchise.
A new Mortal Kombat movie has been in development for years, but the project didn’t really start to gain traction until James Wan became attached to the movie as a producer. 2016 was a good year for Mortal Kombat, as Simon McQuoid was hired to direct the reboot. That same year, Wan mentioned that Mortal Kombat wasn’t going to be rushed so that the movie could be done right, rather than quickly making something people won’t enjoy. Earlier this week it was revealed that pre-production on Mortal Kombat would start this month and a filming location of Australia was announced, but a release date was also just revealed.
First reported by Deadline, Mortal Kombat will be released on March 5, 2021. With this specific release date, Mortal Kombat will see competition from the live-action Masters of the Universe, which received the same release date just a few days ago. Both films will also go head to head with Nimona, an animated adaptation of the comic book series of the same name.
Virtually nothing is known about the story or cast of Mortal Kombat so far. Last year, character details for Mortal Kombat were thought to have been released, however, one of the film’s producers was quick to refute the report. As of right now, the only possible casting announcement is Joel Edgerton as Kano, although Warner Bros. hasn’t officially hired the actor just yet.
Fans still have a few more years until Mortal Kombat hits the big screen, but it’s reassuring that the project seems to be moving forward now that it has a set release date. Wan has been busy the past few years with Aquaman and producing a plethora of horror movies, but it looks like he’ll be focusing on Mortal Kombat soon. It’s always possible that Mortal Kombat could be delayed if the pieces don’t fall into place, or could even be moved up if Wan and Warner Bros. are inspired by a certain story. For the time being, fans will just have to stay patient and await more news, while of course beating opponents to a bloody pulp in Mortal Kombat 11.
