The roster of the Mortal Kombat reboot is growing bigger as characters from Mortal Kombat 3 have been confirmed for the movie. Mortal Kombat dates back to the early ’90s when the first video game came out in arcades. Now nearly 30 years later, the Mortal Kombat franchise has expanded to multiple video games, comic books, and two movies. The first two movies that came out in the ’90s were panned by critics and fans, but Warner Bros. is trying to reboot the franchise again.
It’s been 22 years since Mortal Kombat: Annihilation hit theaters, but things on the reboot started to gain more traction once James Wan was added as a producer. About a year later, Simon McQuoid was announced as Mortal Kombat’s director, but more recently, the cast of the film has started to shape up. Iconic characters like Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) and Scorpian (Hiroyuki Sanada) will be included in the movie, as well as Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade, Kano, Jax, Liu Kang, and Mileena. Now, the movie has added even more characters.
Mortal Kombat writer Greg Russo has been active on Twitter, regularly answering fans’ questions about the movie. Most recently, a fan asked Russo if there were any plans to include characters from Mortal Kombat 3 in the reboot, to which Russo replied, “Oh yeah!”. The characters in the post that Russo responded to are Sektor, Cyrax, Kabal, and Nightwolf, all of which first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3. Russo’s response can be seen below:
Mortal Kombat began filming two months ago, but fans will still have to wait until 2021 to catch the fighters up on the big screen. In the meantime, fans still have plenty to do in Mortal Kombat 11, which NetherRealm Studios is still releasing content for. While New Line Cinema tried to bank off of the popularity of the video games back in the ’90s, Warner Bros will likely have better luck since their Mortal Kombat reboot will be more faithful to the games, including brutal fatalities that the series is known for.
While Sektor, Cyrax, Kabal, and Nightwolf are pictured above, Russo didn’t specifically say that those characters from Mortal Kombat 3 would be in the movie. Several other characters like Ermac, Motaro, Sheeva, Rain, and Sindel all made their debut in Mortal Kombat 3, so it’s possible that the characters pictured above might not actually appear in the film. Mortal Kombat can’t possibly include every character from the series in one film, but it’s certainly possible that more characters will be announced for the movie before the film’s release.
