Mortal Kombat 11’s new story trailer has confirmed the presence of several rumored roster members, while also providing some insight into how the narrative’s time travel will work. It may be a little complex, but it has also given us the gift of two different Johnny Cages, so it’s hard not to be thankful for the creative direction of the series’ newest instalment.
Mortal Kombat 11 is set to release in just over a month’s time, and fan anticipation for the game is running high. The title will be the first Mortal Kombat game since 2015’s Mortal Kombat X, and in its absence, the series appears to have leaned harder into the qualities that have made it popular in the fighting game community and beyond. Mortal Kombat 11’s fatalities have been a prominent selling point in the lead-up to release, and several trailers promoting the over-the-top personalities of Mortal Kombat’s most famous characters have indicated that its humor also remains intact.
Mortal Kombat 11’s new story trailer is a mess, but in the way that other good time travel properties are likewise scattershot. Raiden, everyone’s favorite thunder god, has antagonized Kronika, the newest big bad and Mortal Kombat’s first female villain. Kronika feels like the bad guys aren’t doing so hot in Earthrealm, and decides to rebalance good and evil by rewriting the timeline, using Shao Kahn to help. Here’s the full trailer:
There are a few other takeaways from this after coming to terms with the fact that Mortal Kombat 11’s story might be the craziest one yet in a series that zombified Liu Kang for a while. First, there are a number of roster confirmations that rumors had speculated to be true: Erron Black, Jacqui Briggs, Cassie Cage, and Kotal Kahn are all present within the trailer. That’s a big takeaway because the same leakers who spoiled those characters also indicated Noob Saibot would be present as well, which seems all the more likely now that the initial Mortal Kombat 11 leaks have been verified by NetherRealm Studios.
Second, Mortal Kombat 11 really wants fans to enjoy Johnny Cage while we have him. The trailer shows off a meeting between an old-school Johnny and his new, more militarized self. There’s already been a trailer focusing on Cage messing up his own fatality, and the pseudo-action star looks to be a major focal point for the newest game’s more humorous bits.
Mortal Kombat 11 looks like a game that’s embracing everything that made the series that spawned it popular. After such a long absence, that’s probably the best strategy for NetherRealm Studios. Fans just want as much Mortal Kombat as they can handle, and giving them a double dose of Johnny Cage and others is a surefire way to meet that quota.
