For the first time in Mortal Kombat history, players will finally get a chance to see cross-platform play in the form of Mortal Kombat 11’s Krossplay feature. The newest patch of the game offers players a chance to test Krossplay, available only on PlayStation 4 and Xbox platforms.

Gamers have been itching to participate in crossplay (or, in this instance, Krossplay) for more multiplayer games. Today’s technology finally offers gamers a chance to play across platforms, but publishers have been slow in adding in the option. But more and more games are starting to pick up traction towards crossplay. Titles such as Fortnite, Rocket League, and SMITE are among the few that have this feature. Now players can add Mortal Kombat 11 to the list of crossplay games.

Publisher Warner Bros. Games is currently testing a feature in Mortal Kombat 11 where players from both PlayStation 4 and Xbox are put into the same matchmaking pool for Online Kasual game settings. WB Games quietly added the Krossplay feature with the latest 6.8 GB patch. Oddly enough, it seems the patch notes don’t mention the new Krossplay feature as an addition. Players will be able to decide whether or not they want to join in on the Krossplay feature, leaving players with the decision as to whether or not they want to beat an opponent on another platform. Players are able to choose Krossplay in the Online game menu. Additionally, there will be an option at the top-right of players’ screens where Krossplay can be toggled on or off. Mortal Kombat 11 also has designated Krossplay Online Rooms, which will provide players to manually meet up and play. However, WB Games is still working on their new Krossplay feature.

Currently, there seem to be two drawbacks to this system. One of the bigger issues is that unlocks, progress, and content purchases are not usable to gamers while playing Krossplay. A player’s Mortal Kombat 11 profile is exclusive to their respective platform and account. This means that players’ game progress and unlocks are not available to players when using the Krossplay feature. The second drawback is that friends who play on opposite platforms will have to coordinate outside of the system in order to play together. It’s also noteworthy to mention that Krossplay will not be available for PC or Nintendo Switch users. The only platforms this is available for is the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, the current Krossplay initiative for Mortal Kombat is still in its testing phase, so nothing is finalized yet.
