Mortal Kombat 11 launched to much aplomb, being hailed as a return to form for NetherRealm Studio’s franchise on the whole. However, the company’s woes have dominated the conversation around the title as of late, particularly when it comes to allegations of crunch and low pay. After fans complained about how long the MK11 character towers were taking to clear, it now looks like the game’s been updated to reduce grind and to reward players for sticking with it through these tough times.
There was previously an issue with the way that the MK11 character towers functioned which the community has been particularly vocal about since the game’s release. There are various stages to progress in character towers based on executing certain fatalities and blows, to name a few, and previous requirements to obtain the resulting loot from clearing each stage seemed too onerous for many players. However, it now appears that those requirements have now been reduced by a significant amount.
It has been reported by Twisted Voxel that the MK11 character towers have now taken a significant hit from NetherRealm in terms of the tasks that players have to complete to clear each stage. The levels of the character towers and their requirements have now been reduced to the following:
- Level 1: 25 Uppercuts & Throws Level 2: 10 Fatalities & Brutalities Level 3: 25 Krushing Blows and 10,000 blood spilled Level 4: 25 Fatal Blows, 10 Flawless, 25 Wins, 25 Krushing Blows Level 5: 75 Wins, 35 Fatal Blows, 25 Fatalities, 25 Brutalities
These reductions don’t mean that the grind is completely eliminated, but they’re significant enough that they likely feel a lot more achievable for the community. NetherRealm has been fielding complaints from the player base since the game’s launch, and it has committed early on to fixing those issues. It looks like this change to the MK11 character towers is the first meaningful step in delivering the kind of player experience that fans have been clamoring for.
However, there’s no word yet on whether or not more in-game currency is going to be rewarded from the MK11 character towers. That was the other issue that fans had with the customization available to them in the game being gated by how hard it was to earn the currency to tweak your chosen fighter. While NetherRealm appears to have fixed one aspect of what made the character towers so onerous to get through, it’s unclear if just changing up the requirements will be enough for fans to feel like the pressure to spend on Mortal Kombat 11’s microtransactions has truly lifted.
