Mortal Kombat 11 overhauls the Mortal Kombat franchise’s economy, making fatalities and a huge assortment of costumes unlockable either through play or by using the in-game currency. Players looking to crush their competition in style need to look no further, as they can read on to discover the best ways to unlock them all.
There’s plenty to do in Mortal Kombat 11, from its time-bending campaign to classic local and online multiplayer. That said, players looking to flay their opponent’s with extra spectacle or set themselves apart from the crowd will find themselves spending a lot of time in two places: the Krypt and Towers of Time.
The Krypt isn’t anything new, so anyone familiar with the series should know how it works: navigate a sprawling expanse and spend Koins to unlock chests and new areas. (Of course, the upgrade to an over-the-shoulder perspective is much appreciated.) Towers of Time, however, is a vicious, time-limited spin on the franchise’s Klassic Towers, and players will need to best the towers in order to get some of Mortal Kombat 11’s most elusive unlocks.
Mortal Kombat 11 - Hidden Fatalities & How to Get Them
Mortal Kombat 11’s fatalities are the most brutal they’ve ever been. Whereas these visceral finishers once demanded that players memorize their required button-presses like any other combo, the series began to generously provide this and other helpful information on the pause screen over time. In Mortal Kombat 11, players looking to humiliate their dazed foes will see that they only have access to one Fatality for each character from the start. Those seeking to remedy this will need to make a trip to Shang Tsung’s Island, which houses the new and improved Krypt. Spending Koins, Soul Fragments, and Hearts (yes, literal anatomical hearts) in order to open the Krypt’s wide variety of unmarked chests, players will have to rely on luck to obtain the fatalities they seek.
Of course, nothing increases one’s chances like repeated attempts, so obtaining copious amounts of those currencies should be the top priority. The contents of regular chests that can be bought for Koins are character-specific but random, thus meaning they can be re-rolled using time-warping boosts like Kronospheres or the Kronika Time Vault. Koins and Soul Fragments are awarded daily as login bonuses, but they’re most plentifully earned through gameplay. Heaps of Koins are handed out for just playing the game, meanwhile Soul Fragments and Hearts require players to complete challenges, perform combat feats, and explore the Krypt’s depths. Unlike Koin chests, Soul Fragment and Heart chests contain fixed rewards that can only be obtained once. In addition to the aforementioned boosts, players can help turn the odds of scoring new fatalities in their favor by using Konsumables, which can squeeze additional currency out of activities, grant free items, and more.
Mortal Kombat 11 Costumes Unlock Guide
Mortal Kombat 11 has the widest selection of alternate costumes for its 26 fighters in franchise history, with each fighter having dozens waiting to be unlocked. Fortunately, the methods for obtaining fighters’ alternate fatalities can also be used to unlock their costumes, so players wanting to work on both collections simultaneously won’t be sacrificing anything by pursuing one over the other. That said, getting skins is slightly more complicated. Only about half of all skins can be found in the Krypt, while most of the rest are locked behind the walls of the Towers of Time and character progression towers.
Similar to Mortal Kombat X’s Living Towers, the Towers of Time are only available for limited amounts of time before disappearing again and grant fixed rewards for completion, letting players at least know what they’re getting before jumping in. Towers of Time range in difficulty from challenging to tough-as-nails, so prepare to reach controller-throwing levels of frustration when suffering yet another cheap death after waiting to get back into a particular tower. There are tower-specific Konsumables that can help, though, one of which allows players to take a single crack at a tower even if it’s not in rotation.
An alternative to the Towers of Time lies in the more forgiving and unchanging character progression towers, which also allow players to pursue specific skins and equipment for individual characters - just not the skins found in the Towers of Time. For completionists who manage to collect all of the skins in the Krypt and towers, or for those who just want to unlock something right off the bat, the remainder of the game’s skins can be unlocked in AI Battles and Tutorial Mode. Rewarding players for working on the fundamentals before punishing themselves in what amounts to a bit of a grind, this noble minority of skins are the game’s easiest and most straightforward to obtain.
It almost goes without saying that progression is more complicated than ever in Mortal Kombat 11, and many players don’t think it’s a step in the right direction. Though the steep difficulty of the Towers of Time and artificial grind presented by the game’s economy could possibly be modified when the game releases, as things stand it appears that players will have a lot to get done if they want to kill and look their best.
