Mortal Kombat 11 is truly embracing its desire to evoke nostalgia in gamers, releasing a launch trailer that resurrects the classic Mortal Kombat movie theme song in all of its campy techno glory. Mortal Kombat 11 has been making a concerted effort to appeal to long-time fans of the series, with a slew of returning characters, trailers featuring the kind of humor the franchise staked its name on in the late 90s and early 2000s, and a convoluted storyline that’s so insane it slowly begins to make sense the longer one stares into the abyss.
Mortal Kombat 11 releases in a few days, and fans couldn’t be more excited. The game has showcased its many new fatalities over the last few months, with an emphasis on what brought the franchise into the forefront of the fighting genre in the first place: creativity laced with viscera. Mortal Kombat 11’s trailers have also shown off the kind of off-the-wall, sophomoric humor that has made it such an endearing presence in a genre that often takes itself a little too seriously. Ahead of a late April launch, the only thing fans have been concerned about so far is how Mortal Kombat 11’s online ranked play will be handled, but that’s something nobody can really judge before its implemented.
Today, though, all concerns about gameplay were temporarily washed away by a new trailer that was laden with nostalgic references. NetherRealm Studios unveiled the new Mortal Kombat 11 launch trailer, set to a remix of the song “Techno Syndrome,” made famous by the iconic, cult-classic and so-bad-its-good Mortal Kombat movie. The new remix was created by Dimitri Vegas and 2WEI, and honestly fits the tone of the trailer perfectly, as the video shows off just how wild Mortal Kombat 11’s time-traveling storyline will be. In the new Mortal Kombat 11 launch trailer, fan favorites struggle to stop the new big bad Kronika as she attempts to rewind time to its beginning and restart history. In order to restore balance, players will need to control fighters from different eras of Mortal Kombat history, which will inevitably culminate in clashes between current and past selves of certain characters. Fans got a taste of that when Mortal Kombat 11 teased a showdown between a past and present version of series dunce Johnny Cage, but the new launch trailer shows off a lot of tantalizing potential pairings that the storyline appears prepared to deliver on.
Sometimes, a long-standing series needs to return to its roots to succeed, and Mortal Kombat 11 appears to be doing just that. It’s hard not to get excited about a game that’s so obviously aware of all the in-jokes, tropes, and over-the-top expectations it has created for itself over its decades of existence. Series creator Ed Boon and the team at NetherRealm Studios are cooking up a fighting game with a lot of personality and charm, and even if fans need to wipe a stray eyeball or intestine away to see it, it’s shining through just days ahead of launch.
