Version 1.04 of Mortal Kombat 11 is live, and it seems that NetherRealm Studios has patched the so-called “head glitch” out of the game’s Krypt. Though it was short-lived (the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, eh?), the exploit allowed savvy players to skip an overly grindy process and collect on a unique area’s rewards with minimal effort.
The Mortal Kombat 11 Krypt houses countless chests, and few areas stand out quite like Shang Tsung’s Warrior Shrine. The shrine is lined with 26 pedestals topped with spikes, each with a character-specific “Head Chest” laid at their feet. The game’s challenge to the player is to perform 50 Fatalities and Brutalities on each of the fighters within the game’s recently rebalanced Towers of Time mode in order to unlock their corresponding Head Chests. Anyone besides competition-tier pros knows that this is an insane expectation that even series creator Ed Boon would struggle to explain away, so, fittingly, the Mortal Kombat 11 community recently found their way around it by exploiting a surprisingly simple glitch. Now, it appears the Head Glitch’s time is sadly up.
Although PS4 players of Mortal Kombat 11 were previously able to simply hold the X button while loading the Krypt and continue doing so until reaching the Warrior Shrine and (somehow) opening their desired Head Chest of choice, patch 1.04 for the PS4 version appears to have removed the exploit, according to GameFaqs. It’s presumed that NetherRealm caught wise to players’ workaround since the Head Glitch went viral among the Mortal Kombat online community, but the developer has yet to furnish patch notes to confirm that its removal was the primary focus of the small update.
It’s no secret that NetherRealm employees work very hard, so it’s little surprise that the update was rolled out so quickly after players discovered the glitch’s existence. At the time of writing, version 1.04 has yet to roll out for Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC players, so any non-PS4 players looking to slap decapitated heads onto loot-giving spikes without having to perform potentially hundreds of finishing moves may want to give it a try before it’s taken away for good.
While Mortal Kombat 11 is fairly stingy with its cosmetic rewards, NetherRealm addressing the game’s Head Glitch isn’t really in the same territory of Bioware squashing the only bug (lovingly called the “loot shower” by players) that fixed loot issues in Anthem better than any intentional fix ever did. Beyond the fighter’s issues with microtransactions, Mortal Kombat 11 is an excellent game in its own right; something a lot of new games can’t boast in 2019. However, players’ willingness to circumvent even legitimate facets of its artificial grind speaks to the fact that even good full-price games are better when players feel like content isn’t being arbitrarily locked away from them.
