During The Game Awards 2019, the publisher Wizards of the Coast revealed an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons title, Dark Alliance, and stated that the fans can expect “seven or eight” new games from the popular franchise in the next few years. After a prolonged absence from the game industry, Dungeons & Dragons experienced a surge of popularity in the last few years, especially after the release of the fifth edition in 2014.
Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast purchased the game developer Tuque Games with the intention to create a new video game adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons. Founded in 2012, Tuque Games has several industry veterans on its team, so Wizards of the Coast is confident that the partnership will help produce another quality Dungeons & Dragons adaptation, after the Baldur’s Gate series.
As GamesIndustry.biz reports, Dungeons & Dragons’ publisher announced a renaissance of the iconic tabletop game. At The Game Awards 2019, the company stated that it’s working on Dark Alliance, a mid-sized video game project. Additionally, Chris Cocks, President of Wizards of the Coast, said that his company is planning to develop “seven or eight” Dungeons & Dragons games in the near future. The reason for creating multiple games in the same franchise is avoiding repetitiveness, as Cocks explained to GamesIndustry.biz, “what you don’t want to do is have every game in the franchise try to do the same thing, and try to do everything all at once.”
Earlier this year, the video game developer Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast announced Baldur’s Gate 3, based on the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The announcement came during the first ever Google Stadia Connect, but the company has since reassured fans that the game will be available on multiple platforms. Plus, the upcoming title will have over 100 hours of content, other than both co-op and single-player modes.
It is clear that Wizards of the Coast wants to cash in on the increasing popularity of the classic series Dungeons & Dragons. The fans of the popular tabletop game from the ’70s can surely expect plenty of new video games about their favorite saga in the near future. However, the players will have to wait in order to see whether Wizards of the Coast, together with the developers Tuque Games and Larian Studios, will be able to adapt Dungeons & Dragons’ complex rules to modern audiences, without deviating too far from the original games. Additionally, it will be interesting to see how the publisher will manage to release several titles from the same franchise over few years, without being repetitious.
