Actress Adria Arjona says that her upcoming film Morbius will be “cool and edgy”. Sony’s next Spider-Man spinoff film stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who accidentally turns himself into a vampire after attempting to cure his rare blood disease. Arjona will be playing Martine Bancroft, who was Morbius’ fiancé in the comic books.
Morbius may be the next spinoff Sony plans on releasing, but it is far from the only one. After the massive success of Venom at the box office, Sony seems to be moving forward with several different projects that revolve around Spider-Man’s popular villains. Characters like Silver Sable and Black Cat have been confirmed to be getting their own solo films, while other well-known villains like Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter could be getting their own movies as well. If these movies are to follow the tone of Venom, they will likely be darker superhero tales, and Morbius seems to be following suit.
When speaking with Blackfilm, Arjona commented on her involvement in the upcoming superhero flick. After promoting her new film Triple Frontier, Arjona said, “I’m leaving for the set after the (Triple Frontier) premiere. I’m getting on a plane and working all day Monday. I love comic books and I love my little brother. I’m trying to get sister points in every way that I can. I love the story of Dr. Morbius. I think it’s cool and edgy and interesting. That’s all I can really say”. Fans have to wait a bit longer to see Arjona in Morbius, but Triple Frontier comes to Netflix on March 13 and is currently being shown in select theaters.
As Morbius’ fiancé, Arjona will likely get a good amount of screen time, but there have been a few more casting announcements as Morbius recently entered production. It is currently unknown what character he will be playing, but Jared Harris joined Morbius a few days ago, possibly as a mentor to Morbius. Tyrese Gibson also joined the cast recently as an FBI Agent, and Doctor Who’s Matt Smith is said to be playing Loxias Crown; Morbius’ best friend turned enemy.
Arjona’s comments on Morbius were very brief, but fans have come to expect that from superhero movies, especially Marvel ones. Her opinion of the film doesn’t really give anything away, but it is currently one of the best descriptions of the film, as brief as it may be. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has tended to be more light-hearted than other superhero movies, but Sony seems to be going the darker and more serious route with their live-action superhero movies. Even though Venom got mixed reviews, Sony probably doesn’t feel the need to switch up their formula when it comes to live-action movies. As long as the “cool and edgy” Morbius does well at the box office, Sony will likely continue to make serious Spider-Man spinoffs for years to come.
