It has only been a few days, but the entertainment industry is still buzzing about the Oscars – specifically Best Picture. Moonlight won the award after an on-stage mishap incorrectly announced La La Land the victor, and the confusion around it has arguably overshadowed the film’s achievement. In wake of the win, however, the cast has seen their profiles increased, with Mahershala Ali winning Best Supporting Actor, and Trevante Rhodes now being asked whether or not he’s interested in playing a superhero on screen.
Rhodes most recently joined the ensemble of Shane Black’s The Predator, but his name has become attached to another high-profile project recently, as fans have begun to throw his name into consideration for the role of John Stewart in Green Lantern Corps.
MTV asked Rhodes on the Academy Awards red carpet whether or not he would like to join a superhero project. Rhodes responded with a yes, due to that being a dream come true and for the further exposure it would likely give Moonlight. But what about playing a Green Lantern? When asked directly, he would only say “I don’t know,” but his big smile may indicate otherwise.
There has so far been no official or unofficial reports linking Rhodes to Green Lantern Corps. However, with his star rising, this would be a great get for Warner Bros. While it is usually best to take actors at their word, discussing the possibility of being in projects they have not yet signed on for is tricky. If an actor says or does the wrong thing, those talks could fall apart, so sometimes it is best to dodge the questions like Rhodes does here.
With an Oscar-winning film in his filmography and the potential for him to breakout in the mainstream with The Predator, it would be quite surprising if a studio – Warner Bros. Disney, or Fox – doesn’t snag him for a superhero gig. It is interesting to note, however, that fans have also called for Rhodes’ Moonlight co-star Mahershala Ali to land the role as well. There is no doubt that either of these actors would do a fine job in the role, but with the project still years away from hitting theaters, Warners has plenty of time to work on a possible deal with Rhodes – unless they hope to introduce him in Justice League first.
