While the Call of Duty series has always launched DLC first on PS4 throughout this console generation, Infinity Ward will be changing that and making “most” DLC available to each platform at the same time. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be the first game in the series to include crossplay between PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Furthermore, it’ll also be the first Call of Duty title to omit a DLC season pass. This move is to ensure that everyone playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare can always play together as long as they simply own the game.
Infinity Ward still has yet to reveal all the content that’ll be included in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Before the game launches on October 25, fans will get a glimpse at the new single-player campaign as well as the returning special ops mode. Infinity Ward is attempting to raise the bar with this year’s Call of Duty campaign. However, some people are worried that the developer may just be pushing the game to be more controversial. Previous entries, and more specifically Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 included some graphic missions that really polarized fans and even the development team.
Charlie Intel spotted a post over on the Activision Blog which detailed how crossplay will work in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as well as the new postlaunch DLC plans. New multiplayer modes, maps, and spec ops missions will now launch simultaneously across every platform. Infinity Ward does go on to point out that the PS4 will still be the best place to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. PS4 owners will have some sort of advantage included with the game at launch, although the developer hasn’t revealed details on that just yet.
This move, again, is probably to ensure that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare community stays together through the same updates and multiplayer content. Giving PS4 owners early access to new maps and modes would certainly defeat the purpose of the game including crossplay and omitting the season pass. PS4 players have gotten some benefits over the past couple of weeks, including exclusive access to the Call of Duty gunfight Alpha, as well as early access to the game’s Open Beta.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is seeing some of the most radical changes made to the series yet. Infinity Ward has said that the game will also include one of the largest post-launch roadmaps in the series to date. Meaning fans can expect a lot of reasons to continue coming back to the game’s multiplayer.
