Columbian beauty Gloria Pritchett is the epitome of making the best out of poor circumstances. Leaving her family behind, she ventured to America with her son Manny to make a better life for herself. Luckily, she met Jay at a diner and the rest is history. Marrying Jay meant Gloria became apart of the crazy Pritchett/Dunphy/Tucker family that makes up Modern Family.
We’ve watched Gloria for 11 seasons and have seen her grow and mature even when there was no room to do so. However, that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t had her fair share of mistakes. Gloria is the queen of doing sneaky things, hoping no one finds out but they always blow up in her face. Let’s take a look at 10 horrible things Gloria has done that has affected the whole family,
SHE SENT CLAIRE A SCATHING EMAIL
In the earlier seasons when Gloria was newer to the family, Claire wasn’t very fond of Gloria. She was jealous of her beauty and clearly thought she was a gold digger. But with both Manny and Luke in the same grade at school, Gloria and Claire had to work together sometimes for school functions.
But after Claire rejects Gloria’s help, Gloria decides to write out her feelings in the form of an email but never send it. Unfortunately, Gloria accidentally sent the email to Claire. Luckily, Claire was in a pickle herself and never saw the email before Gloria deleted it but it was dramatic enough that it involved both Jay and Phil.
SHE WAS LATE FOR PHIL’S MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH
In the episode “Egg Drop,” Phil asks Gloria and Haley to help him with a motivational presentation he was putting together. He was going to have both ladies sit in the audience and pretend to be taken away by Phil’s presentation and help him sell the audience. But when Gloria and Haley found a window of time to get a manicure/pedicure, they took it and ended up completely missing Phil’s presentation. This greatly upset Phil and it clearly showed through his speech. This was also one of the first moments we saw Phil tell Gloria he was disappointed in her.
SHE TOOK SONIA’S OPPORTUNITY TO LEAVE COLUMBIA
The sibling rivalry between Gloria and Sonia is hilarious to watch. As the older sister, Gloria got every opportunity and praise in the book, while Sonia was always second best.
When we first meet her, she’s taken back by Gloria’s new American lifestyle and can’t fathom living so large. But as we find out, Gloria’s life could have been Sonia’s life. When Sonia had an opportunity to come to the US, Gloria took it instead. To make matters worse, we also find out Jay was first interested in Sonia but Gloria moved in for the kill first and won him over! Her relationship with Sonia didn’t affect the Pritchetts/Tuckers/Dunphys, but it surely affected her blood relatives.
SHE HID HER STEP-TRACKER ON CLAIRE TO DECEIVE THE FAMILY
The wonderful part about Gloria and Jay’s relationship is how competitive they are. It totally meshes with the Pritchett way of thinking.
After making a bet with Jay that she can reach 10,000 steps in a day (without shopping), she decides to attach her step-tracker on Claire who happened to run a 10k that day. Thanks to a satellite, Gloria’s fake accomplishment comes to light after her steps show the same course Claire ran. Due to her tracker, it also put Claire in hot water because it shows her taking a non-verified route on her run. This proved that Claire took a major shortcut in the race and didn’t actually win it.
ATTACKING ALL OF MANNY’S GIRLFRIENDS
We always knew Gloria and Manny had a sacred relationship. The two relied on each other heavily when it was just the two of them, so their bond is extra close. Due to their tight bond, Gloria despises the women Manny brings home. They’re never good enough for Manny and Gloria does everything she can to divide the couple. Whether it was a childhood crush Manny had or the professor he brought home from university, it doesn’t matter how old Manny is; no woman is good enough for Gloria’s firstborn.
SHE KICKED CAMERON AND MITCHELL OUT OF HER HOUSE
After a freak accident revolving around Mitchell’s juicer, the Pritchett-Tucker kitchen went up in flames. With no working kitchen, the family of three moved in with the Pritchett-Delgados while Jay and his team did everything they could to fix the mess. But it’s clear that they have overstayed their welcome because Gloria begins to lose patience — especially with Cam.
After Gloria feels suffocated by Cam’s invasiveness, she throws a ton of insults his way and tells him to get out of her house. Knowing how emotional and sensitive Cameron is, this clearly upset him and Mitch.
TRYING TO SECRETLY BAPTIZE HALEY’S TWINS
Finding out Haley was pregnant with Dylan’s babies threw a curve in the road but the couple made it work. Gloria has always been supportive of her adopted grandchildren and has a kinship with Haley (mainly because of their love of fashion). After Haley gives birth to the twins, Gloria plans to babysit them but that’s not all. She invites a priest over to secretly baptize them. Baptizing them was not on Haley or Dylan’s list and it was dishonest for her to trick a priest into baptizing children that weren’t hers. Haley, Dylan, and Jay barged in on Gloria and the priest and decided against it but it sure did make Gloria look bad.
SCARRING JOE BY EXPLAINING WHAT DEATH IS
Sweet little Joe is the perfect combination of Gloria and Jay. He’s ballsy, he’s witty, he’s adorable. However, in this episode, Joe is curious about death and asks his parents for more information. Jay tells Joe a softer, more fictional, version of what death is and eases Joe’s mind.
But when it’s Gloria’s time to tell Joe what death is, she gives it to him straight, which really upsets him (and the friends he has over that night). So, at the end of the day, not only did Gloria upset her child but she upset all of his friends and their families.
TRICKING THE FAMILY INTO THINKING JAVIER WASN’T MANNY’S REAL DAD
We learn early on that Gloria’s ex-husband Javier is a deadbeat dad and that he was a horrible husband. The two had a very physical relationship and that was about it. But in the episode “Daddy Issues,” Gloria decides to play a senseless prank on Jay and Manny and claims she’s not so sure that Javier is Manny’s real dad. It could be a friend of hers named Jorge. Jorge looked and acted just like Manny, which was convincing enough but when Alex found paternity paperwork, it became clear that Manny didn’t know who his real dad was. As we find out at the end of the episode, it was all just a big prank put on by Gloria… Pretending that your child has been lied to his whole life doesn’t seem like much of a good joke.
HER SECRET ‘GETAWAY’ BAG
When Joe was a baby, it became time for Gloria and Jay to create their will in case anything bad happened to them. They wanted to make sure that both Manny and Joe were protected no matter what. Mitchell asked about Manny’s college fund and Gloria assured him that she already had $40,000 tucked away for his education. When Jay asked Gloria where she was hiding this large chunk of money, she said it was in her “getaway” bag. It was a bag secretly hidden in case she needed to leave Jay in the middle of the night… Not only did this insult Jay but it was deeply upsetting! To make matters trickier. She hid the money in an old bag she lent to Alex and Haley who were currently at a concert.
