For 11 seasons of Modern Family, we’ve seen the ins and outs of the Dunphy household. From family dinners at the dining room table to quick breakfasts at the kitchen island to going up and down those steps multiple times a day. The Dunphy residence is worn and weathered. Those walls have seen Haley, Alex, and Luke grow up. Those gutters have seen Phil’s “git r done!” destroy those leaves (and bird eggs). Those steps have felt people trip on them hundreds of times. Phil and Claire’s home may be chaotic but it holds a lot of love.

Although the show wasn’t filmed inside the actual house shown in the introduction (it was filmed on set), we’re taking a look at some small changes and additions fans haven’t noticed while watching their favorite sitcom.

ALEX’S CORKBOARD STAYED THE SAME

Over in the Tucker-Pritchett household, we see Lili slowly grow into a teenager. And when the timing was right, she knew it was time to grow from a little girl’s bedroom to a teenage girl’s bedroom. They painted over the mural and made it more mature for her. Over in the Dunphy residence, we didn’t see too much of that.

We eventually saw Haley move into the basement but for Alex, it appears her corkboard has been the same since she was a little girl in middle school. The same exact drawings can be seen throughout the seasons (with a few new additions).

THEY SWAPPED THEIR DINING ROOM CHAIRS WITHOUT US NOTICING

As a sitcom, the Dunphy household is very decorated. There are different shapes and patterns and colors to really make the house look lived-in. We don’t see the Dunphys having too many sit-down dinners in their dining room, but when they did, we noticed a small change. It appears Claire and Phil redecorated without anyone noticing. They swapped out the kitchen carpet and opted for classier looking chairs than the ones prior. One thing that remains the same and can be seen throughout the house is the small tray in the center of the table. When you look through the scenes, the Dunphys have a tray in practically every room.

THEY HAVE A LOS ANGELES TRAVEL BOOK ON THEIR COFFEE TABLE

Living just outside of Los Angeles their entire lives, you would assume the Dunphys know everything there is about the city and its surrounding areas. Regardless if they actually look through the book or not, there’s a Los Angeles coffee table book sitting front and center.

Now, it could be used for decoration or Phil may skim through it for fun facts when showing a house. In the living room, if you zoom in on yet another tray, they also have a coffee table book on skyscrapers  — we’re assuming that was Phil’s purchase.

THEIR KITCHEN ISLAND CHANGED WITHOUT NOTICE

In the early seasons, the Dunphys’ kitchen island was more intricate. It was quite large and had two cabinets for storage on the outside facing the dining room table. However, without anyone noticing, the Dunphys’ kitchen island changed. It became a darker shade and they got rid of the outer storage cupboards. The same three stools remain, though.

REAL BABY PICTURES WERE USED OF THE CAST

We never really get a hard look at the photos going up the staircase, but it’s slightly obvious they’re of the family. In one early episode when Haley breaks up with Dylan, he goes up the stairs to talk to her. However, he begins to cry after seeing all her pictures hanging on the wall.

But those picture frames aren’t just filled with random people — they really are filled with baby pictures of the cast and posed pictures of Phil and Claire. In the snap above, we can see a framed picture of Alex as a child smiling with pigtails and overalls.

WHAT CAME BEFORE ALEX AND BEN’S LOVE-MAKING PORTRAIT?

In the ninth season, Alex and Ben (mainly Alex) decide to defy Claire by creating a love-making portrait and leaving it for her as a sarcastic gift. Knowing what Alex was trying to do, Claire decided to fight fire with fire and hung their body-work portrait on the wall facing the dining room table. After watching this scene, many fans forgot what was on the wall in the first place. If you look at the image on the left, we can see it was a painting of fruit and small, decorative plates hanging around it. The light hanging above Alex and Ben’s artwork was added for dramatic effect, it seems.

CLAIRE’S COOKBOOK COLLECTION

If you look around the Dunphy kitchen, you’ll notice they have a lot of storage for plates, mugs, and wine glasses. They also have a ton of cookbooks slid into crevices around the kitchen. While it’s typically hard to see what books Claire is trying to cook from, in this scene we can make two books out very clearly:  The Frugal Gourmets by Jeff Smith and a book called 500 Low-Calorie Recipes.

Claire is pretty health-conscious and loves to work out (and balances it with drinking a lot of wine), so it’s fun to see these books match her personality; they’re not just there to fill up space.

WE’VE NEVER SEEN THE DUNPHYS’ PORCH

In the episode “Do You Believe in Magic,” we see Phil gifting Claire a swing they can place on their porch. The swing was the very same one they sat in when they were younger that still had their names carved on the back. Phil promised to put it on their porch so they can sit and swing on it at the end of the day. However, we never really see the Dunphy porch. We see glimpses of the front porch during the Halloween episodes but never their back one. The Dunphys even head over to Jay and Gloria’s when they want to sit outside. Is their backyard not good enough?

YOU CAN BUY THEIR KITCHENWARE FOR CHEAP

Believe it or not, you can actually eat and drink out of the same dishes the Dunphys use. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the striped dishes used by the Dunphys are able to be purchased from Pier 1 Imports and Crate & Barrel. This means you can easily replicate the Dunphys home for a bargain.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THEIR KITCHEN CORKBOARD

Another part about the Dunphy household that fans love is how used it looks. Knowing how much of a scatterbrain Claire is, it’s fun for fans to see her notes laying everywhere and her calendar filled with events and happenings with the family.

If you zoom in on the picture on the left, we can see the Dunphys’ address (2049 Oak Creek Dr., Cheviot Hills, CA.) on an envelope written to Claire and Phil. Funny enough, the address to the actual face of the house is 10336 Dunleer Dr., Los Angeles!
