The Mortal Kombat series has always been host to a plethora of hidden easter eggs, and a new one involving Scorpion and a certain sound programmer has recently been found in MK11. While not as riddled with secrets as past titles like Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat 2011, this discovery proves that players still have not unearthed everything there is to find in NetherRealm Studios’ excellent fighting game.
Like many of the easter eggs found in later games of the series, this newly discovered secret references a former Mortal Kombat game, specifically Scorpion’s “Toasty” fatality from MKII. In what became one of his most classic moves, Scorpion rips his mask off and reveals nothing but an eerie, skinless skull underneath and then proceeds to breathe fire on his opponent while MK sound programmer Dan Forden screams the word “Toasty!” in the background. Forden’s voice could also be heard when the player executes an uppercut after a long combo, a touch which was also included in MK11, but until now that’s been the only place in the new game where his voice could be heard.
As reported by Eurogamer, the new “Toasty” easter egg is not linked to a fatality, but instead to one of Mortal Kombat 11’s many brutalities. Brutalities occur when players meet certain prerequisites during their fight and finish off their opponent with a particular special move or attack, resulting in an instant death that leaves no time for fatality inputs. One of Scorpion’s brutalities, Crispy, visually and mechanically mimics the MKII “Toasty” fatality by requiring a player to defeat their opponent with the Demon Breath attack, which causes them to catch fire and instantly be reduced to ash. By holding ATTACK 3 (which is the A button by default on Xbox One and X by default on the PS4) while the Demon Breath is occurring and pressing down once the brutality animation begins, a player can activate Dan Forden’s voice once again.
Although “Toasty!” is Forden’s most popular line, the Mortal Kombat team has been known to change it up from time to time. In MK3 Forden would scream “Frosty!” if Sub-Zero froze an opponent while their health was in the ‘Danger Zone’, and in Mortal Kombat 4 he can be heard shouting “Toasty 3D!” to emphasize the newly developed 3D animations.
Since players have only just discovered this somewhat simple-to-execute easter egg, many fans are assuming that it was added into the game during the latest update, which also nerfed some of Scorpion’s attacks. While such additions are a nice nod to the franchise’s history, the reports of intense crunch and low pay at NetherRealm that circulated a few months ago cast a shadow on any new content that the studio puts out, and players can only hope that no developers lost any sleep over a silly little easter egg.
