Writer Tom King has been teasing his fans about the mystery co-lead of the upcoming Strange Adventures maxiseries from DC Comics, but the truth is out thanks to series artist Mitch Gerads. And it’s turned out to be absolutely Terrific – in more ways than one.
On Wednesday, King teased the Strange Adventures co-star in the form of pages pulled directly from the final issue of Heroes in Crisis, implying that one of the thirty-five characters was the top secret character set to join Adam Strange in Strange Adventures series. Strange Adventures reunites the creative team of Tom King and Mitch Gerads, who are joined by Evan “Doc” Shaner, in the follow up to their award-winning Mister Miracle series. As the name suggests, this tale will star Adam Strange, an archaeologist from Earth… who also uses a laser gun and a jetpack to fight crime throughout the galaxy, while protecting his adopted planet Rann. And he won’t be doing it alone.

Mitch Gerads and Evan ”Doc” Shaner both released tweets previewing the covers for the first two issues of the series. It was Gerads’ tweeted cover (embedded below) which provides the answer to King’s tease. Depicting Adam Strange on his knees, with bloody handprints on his spacesuit. This scene is set against the backdrop of a constellation map, as T-spheres float around Adam him saying “Lie.” A follow-up image from Gerads shows what appears to be Mister Terrific applying greasepaint, in the shape of his trademark ‘T mask.’
Michael “Mister Terrific” Holt is both an interesting and exciting pick to be joining Adam Strange on his adventures. Both Strange and Mister Terrific are regular humans who are able to do extraordinary things thanks to technology, and scientists in their own right. Mister Terrific, currently the leader of The Terrifics, brings his skill set as an inventor, adventurer, and athlete along with the possibility for a more profound theological discussion to this series.
As to how Mister Terrific’ s interview session from Heroes In Crisis #9 was a clue to his involvement in this series remains hard to decipher. The panel in question shows Mister Terrific during a Sanctuary session, talking about perceptions one can have while watching a race. On the surface, he appears to be alluding to how he sees himself perceived his peers in the superhero community since he is a normal human being who just happens to also be a prodigy, Olympic level athlete, and the third smartest man on Earth. How and if King left any clues in this panel that hinted at his appearance in Strange Adventures is unclear, and perhaps will be addressed in the series.
The on-panel chemistry between Mister Terrific and Strange remains to be seen as these characters don’t usually associate or interact with each other regularly in the DC Universe. Clearly worth watching as the series unfolds.
Strange Adventures #1 is scheduled to be released on March 4th, 2020.
The Mister Miracle team of writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads are joined by fan-favorite artist Evan “Doc” Shaner to bring you an epic tale in the tradition of Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and DC: The New Frontier-a story of blood, war, and love that readers will be talking about for years to come.
