Season 3 of Netflix’s Mindhunter won’t be happening soon, but has the series been cancelled or is there still hope for a new season? The streaming platform has added a lot of crime series and documentaries in the last years, and one that earned the praise of critics and viewers is Mindhunter. Created by Joe Penhall and with David Fincher and Charlize Theron among its producers, Mindhunter debuted on Netflix in 2017, and the second season arrived two years later.

Netflix’s Mindhunter follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), who operate the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. Their job is to interview imprisoned serial killers to better understand their damaged psyches and thus be able to catch other killers. Season 1 was set between 1977 and 1980, in the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at the FBI, and featured serial killer Edmund Kemper (Cameron Britton) in a recurring role.

Season 2 of Mindhunter was set in 1980 through 1981, and focused primarily on the Atlanta murders of 1979-81. This season featured serial killers like Wayne Williams, Charles Manson, and David Berkowitz (known as the Son of Sam). Both seasons were praised for their cinematic visuals and character development, and a third season seemed like the obvious next step for the series – however, the future of Mindhunter is now unclear.

Netflix Has Put Mindhunter On Hold, Not Cancelled It

Mindhunter is now on an indefinite hiatus, but isn’t cancelled. According to Netflix (via EW), Mindhunter is on hold as David Fincher is currently working on his first Netflix film Mank (which follows Herman J. Mankiewicz’s development of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane) and producing the second season of the animated sci-fi anthology series Love, Death & Robots. Mank is already in production and is expected to be released sometime this year, while Love, Death & Robots doesn’t have a projected release date, but given all the work that goes into animated short films, Fincher will be very busy with these two projects.

Netflix Has Released Mindhunter’s Cast From Their Contracts

Given that the future of Mindhunter is unclear, Netflix has released the actors from their contracts, allowing them to seek out other projects. Netflix’s statement said Fincher felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to “hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own”. The cast has previously expressed interest in the future of the series, so they will hopefully reprise their roles if Fincher decides to move forward with a third season in the future. In the meantime, they are free to take other projects.

Mindhunter Season 3 Could Still Happen

Again, Mindhunter is on hold, not cancelled. This means that if Fincher and company decide to make season 3 happen when their schedules are less busy, they can do it. Netflix’s statement on Mindhunter’s hiatus also said Fincher “may revisit Mindhunter again in the future”, so not all hope is lost. It’s hard to say when Mindhunter season 3 could happen, as many factors come into play for this, not just Fincher’s commitments, but there’s still a chance it will happen, though not as soon as fans would like.
